Sunsets at Lake Monroe: A Summer on the Sanford Waterfront

Sunsets at Lake Monroe
Some evenings I don't plan anything at all. I just walk down to the waterfront at Lake Monroe, in Sanford, and wait for the sky to do its thing. All through the summer of 2026 I kept coming back with my camera, and the lake never gave me the same sunset twice.
This is a small collection of those evenings.
The walkway
There's a curving walkway that runs along the shore, lined with lampposts. In the golden light of a July evening, it becomes the whole reason to be there — the path bending toward the water, the lamps waiting for dusk.
As the light fades, the lampposts come on. One evening a red moon rose over the far shore while the lamps glowed along the path — one of those quiet moments you don't quite believe until you see the photo later.
Palms and orange skies
Farther along, the path runs beside the road and the lake, framed by palm trees that turn to silhouettes as the sun drops. The skies here get streaked with orange in a way that stops you mid-step.
Over the water
And then there's the water itself — calm and wide, holding the last of the light. Some nights the sun sinks behind a dramatic bank of clouds, the shoreline going dark against it.
The docks and pilings give the foreground something to hold onto. There's an old weathered dock I kept photographing, its wood catching the orange as the bay went still.

If you're ever near Sanford in the evening, come have a beautiful evening at Lake Monroe. Walk the waterfront, watch the lamps come on, and let the sky surprise you. It always surprises me.
